Nationals 2013

How a Fencing competition works:

Fencing Competitions are separated into Male and Female categories for each of the three weapons (Epee, Foil and Sabre) and for the Open Age Group and Veteran Age Group (40yrs +) at ANFC2013. This means there will be 12 Individual competitions running, as well as team competitions.

A competition consists of a round-robin style pool event, where fencers compete to 5 points against 4-8 other competitors in their poule, followed by Direct Elimination (DE) bouts to 15 points. The Direct Elimination bouts are just that – the victor progresses to the next round while the defeated is eliminated from the competition. Rounds are named b how many fencers compete in them – 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, etc

Pools are good to watch if you want to see short bouts with a range of different fencers and styles.

DEs are fun to watch for comebacks, grudges and all-or-nothing daring.

Spectating:
Spectators are welcome in the upper section of the Arena (the stands) over the five days of the event. The finals piste is located behind the curtain at the far end of the Arena – Seating access is available from the competition floor and the concourse. We ask that spectators avoid congregating on the competition floor to allow room for athletes, referees and officials as well as to avoid accidental damages to equipment. Please allow yourself plenty of time to be seated before commencement of an event. If you have any questions, about access, the competition or the sport of fencing, a volunteer in yellow will be able to assist you.
