Fencers frolic at Floriade.

On Friday 12 October 2012 ACTFA participated in Kids Corner at Floriade. Kids Corner is a ‘come and try’ day provided free for children as part of the festival. Act Sport Organisations apply to participate in the program. Friday was fencing’s day. Despite the early cold and rainy weather, a committed group of junior fencers and parents along with Coach Garry and Coach Adrian participated in fencing games, delivering vouchers, encouraging children to try fencing and ‘kitting’ up children into the required safety gear. The day was a resounding success with about 70 children coming and trying fencing.

Thank you to the following people:

Garry and Adrian for taking the time to support the program and for their awesome coaching and indefatigable patience with some very young children.

Jodie, Liz, and Tamsin, our wonderful parents who assisted young children in fencing gear, delivered brochures and maintained control over very excited participants (including the coaches).

Our junior fencers Alessio, Anthony, Ben, Claudia, Daniel, and Juliette, who delivered brochures, assisted children in getting their gear on, helped out in games and fencing movements, bouted, referred  bouts, and loaned their own fencing gear when we had too many children at one time. You guys ‘rock’ .

Our junior coach in training Claudia who single handedly took on a number of preschool/ kindergarten age ‘would be fencers’ with small classes of 3-5yr olds. Her ‘Harry Potter’ fencing classes were fantastic in ensuring that small children moved slowly, softly and carefully with their practice foils.
