The Australian Fencing teams and squads - all weapons, mens and womens and all age groups, attended a 4-day High Performance training camp at the AIS just before Christmas. the camp gives fencers around Australia the opportunity to training together over several days, and for coaches from each state to co ordinate and share training methods and ideas. The National Foil, Epee and Sabre coaches invite selected fencers from the States to attend, and 6 ACT fencers participated - gaining valuable experience and skills in the process.
ACTFA thanks State Coaching Director, Anna Robinson for organising the 2014 Level 1 Coaching Course, held at the University of Canberra Sports Hub. 17 aspiring coaches from most ACT clubs completed the theoretical component in one weekend. the next step will be for the coaches to perform supervised coaching hours at clubs. the photo below is of the group with Course Presenter and National Coaching Director, Pieter Leeuwenburgh, from Victoria
ACT Fencing has hosted another successful Open and Senior National Veteran Championships, and Oceania Veteran Championships at the AIS Dec 5-9. This is the third consecutive year Canberra has been the venue and this year and extra 6 Veteran Team competitions were scheduled - taking the total number of competitions to 24 over 5 days. Congratulations to all the ACT fencers that competed. Special mention should go out to Nigel Nutt, who followed up on his Commonwealth Veteran Fencing medals last month in Scotland by becoming Oceania and Australian Veteran Foil Champion (below). the event is even more remarkable when one considers the whole tournament is run by helpers and volunteers from our community. Thankyou to each and every one of you.
The ACT Mozzies (U13s and U11s) traveled to Sydney to take part in the Koala Mini Challenge and Friendship Cup - possibly the biggest tournament for U13s U11s and U9s in the world. Hundreds of young fencers compete from as far away as Japan and Europe. Our Mozzies did well: winning medals but also fencing better in each bout and showing good sportsmanship. Well done, Mozzies and thank you to the people that supported the team all through the year.
